Each year, The Developmental Education Association of Maryland recognizes excellence in the field of Developmental Education. The below awards and scholarships are intended to acknowledge exceptional contributions and accomplishments of students, faculty, and staff. Applications for all awards and scholarships can be found under the documents tab. All applications for DEAM scholarship and awards are due no later than April 1, 2017. The amount of scholarships each year is based upon available funding.

Award for Outstanding Contributor to Developmental Education in Maryland
The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to students, DEAM, state-wide developmental education efforts, and/or the developmental education profession.

  • Applicant must be a current DEAM member
  • Letter of nomination must accompany the application
  • Letter(s) of endorsement from an administrator or a current or former officer of DEAM must accompany the application
  • Other supporting materials which document the nominee’s contributions to developmental education in Maryland may be included in the application


Award for Outstanding Research in Developmental Education
The purpose of this award is to recognize current or past research, or to encourage future research efforts, by a member of DEAM, which will enlighten and strengthen developmental education theory and/or practice.

  • Applicant must be a current DEAM member
  • Applicant must include research abstract (limit 5-10 pages); nominee’s name and professional affiliation should not be identified on the abstract


Alex Afonta Memorial Scholarship to the Kellogg Institute
The purpose of this award is to assist DEAM members who wish to attend the Kellogg Institute for the training and certification of developmental educators. It was named after the late Dr. Alex Afonta, Professor of Developmental Mathematics at the Baltimore City Community College.

  • Applicant must be a current DEAM member
  • Applicant may be attending the Kellogg Institute during the same calendar year OR may be applying for acceptance to the following year’s Kellogg Institute (Scholarship funds will be awarded as reimbursement after successful completion of the Kellogg Institute)
  • Letter of nomination must accompany the application
  • Letter(s) of endorsement from an administrator or a current or former officer of DEAM must accompany the application
  • Other supporting materials which document the nominee’s contributions to developmental education in Maryland may be included with the application
  • The Afonta Memorial Scholarship is awarded on a biannual basis


Rosa Ilardo Howard Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Alumnus of a Development Education Program
The purpose of this award is to recognize an alumnus of a developmental education program who sets a standard for others to emulate.

  • A letter of recommendation must accompany the application by any current DEAM member, Developmental Education Department Chair, Academic Advising, or Registrar
  • Student must have completed all required developmental education courses (i.e. math, reading, and/or writing)
  • An academic transcript is required (unofficial transcript is acceptable)
